Stressed Over Taxes?

Tax season is upon us, and for many that means sleepless nights and stress-induced food binges. Find out how healthy habits can help relieve some of the symptoms.

Tax season is upon us, and for many that means sleepless nights, stress-induced food binges, and strained, fatigued muscles. Many of us know exercise can help relieve some of the symptoms, but what works best?

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) recommends the following activities for reducing stress and anxiety:

Aerobic activity
All it takes is 30 minutes, five to seven days a week. Thirty minutes won't carve a big chunk out of your day and will significantly improve your ability to control stress.

Yoga
In yoga or mind/body activities, your mind relaxes progressively as your body increases its amount of muscular work. Recent studies have shown that when large muscle groups repeatedly contract and relax, the brain receives a signal to release specific neurotransmitters, which in turn make you feel relaxed and more alert.

Recreational sports
Play tennis, racquetball, volleyball or soccer. These games require the kind of vigorous activity that rids your body of stress-causing adrenaline and other hormones.

When facing overwhelming stress, it’s easy to want to disappear from the world and become a couch potato, but it’s important not to skip a chance to exercise. Think about those times when you've been physically active. Haven't you felt better about yourself? Those feelings of accomplishment and greater self-confidence contribute to stress relief and overall relaxation, through April 15 and beyond!
